Azithromycin FAQs

What benefits can I expect when I buy Azithromycin tablets?

Azithromycin is a safe and effective short-term treatment for penile/vaginal chlamydia, gonorrhoea, non-specific urethritis, ureaplasma urealyticum and mycoplasma genitalium. In most cases a short one day dose of five-day dose treatment is enough to cure these bacterial infections, preventing any future complications as a result. The high dose also ensures that any uncomfortable symptoms are taken care of almost straight away.

How do Azithromycin tablets work?

Azithromycin works by affecting the bacteria so that it can't spread, which allows your body more time to fight the bacteria off effectively. It does this by entering the bacterial cell and influencing its inner peptide activity and protein production, which are both activities that are important to keep the cells alive.

Who can take it?

Most people can buy Azithromycin for the treatment of chlamydia, non-specific urethritis, ureaplasma urealyticum and mycoplasma genitalium. For the treatment of gonorrhoea, this medication must be taken together with Cefixime for effective treatment.

Who cannot take it?

Although it's relatively safe for most people to use to treat and cure bacterial STIs, there are certain health conditions with which it's not advisable to take Azithromycin, such as liver disease, kidney disease, myasthenia gravis, a heart rhythm disorder or a history of Long QT syndrome. It may also not be safe to take it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Some medications may also influence or be influenced by Azithromycin, so make sure that you mention any herbal, over-the-counter or prescription medications you are taking when you do your online consultation.

How do you take Azithromycin tablets?

Azithromycin tablets are taken in different doses depending on the condition it's required to treat and cure, but in all cases, the tablets should be taken on an empty stomach. In general, a five day treatment course with a single 500mg dose taken on the first day, then 250mg tablets taken once daily for four days is required for the treatment of penile/vaginal chlamydia. For ureaplasma urealyticum; a single dose of two 500mg tablets is taken in one day. For the treatment of non-specific urethritis or mycoplasma genitalium; two 500mg tablets are taken in a single dose. A single dose of Cefixime for the treatment of gonorrhoea is usually prescribed. You should wait at least two weeks after treatment before conducting another STI test to check whether the treatment has been successful.

Are there any side effects?

Although side effects with Azithromycin are rare, they can still occur. However, they are normally quite mild and pass relatively quickly. The most common side effects are mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach pain or upset, dizziness, tiredness, headaches, vaginal itching or discharge, mild itching or a skin rash. If any of these effects become bothersome or you experience an allergic reaction to the medication, speak to a doctor straight away.
