BMI Calculator
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the standard measurement used to determine a healthy body weight. The BMI scale calculates whether you are at a healthy weight by determining the ratio between your height and your weight. This figure is then compared to the BMI chart (shown below) which details the various BMI categories and helps you to gauge the category in which you fall.
The BMI calculator is divided into four main categories:
- Underweight: Below 18.5
- Normal: 18.5 to 24.9
- Overweight: 25 to 29.9
- Obese: 30 and Above
People with a BMI of between 18.5 and 24.9 are considered to have a healthy body weight. People with a BMI below 18.5 are considered to be underweight, while those over 25 are thought to be over the ideal weight for their height. Those over 30 are considered to be obese and could be at risk of developing life-threatening obesity health complications.
The scale isn’t perfect. Those who have a higher than average amount of muscle mass, such as athletes and bodybuilders, will score higher on the scale, despite not being overweight. However, for most people, the BMI calculator is a suitable indicator as to whether you need to reduce your bodyweight.
How do you calculate BMI?
BMI is calculated by taking your weight, in kilograms, divided by your height squared. So, for example, if you were 1.6 metres tall, and weighed 65 kilograms, the calculation would be 65 divided by 2.56 (1.6 x 1.6). This would give you a BMI of 25.39, which would mean you were very slightly overweight.
You can easily calculate your BMI using the calculator below.
