Cilest FAQs

What are the benefits of using this contraceptive pill?

Cilest pills provide immediate protection against pregnancy if taken on the first day of your period. A Cilest contraceptive pill only needs to be taken once a day, at the same time every day, which makes it a very convenient way to protect yourself against pregnancy. Additional benefits of this pill is that it can help make your periods lighter and less painful, and it allows you to predict when your next period will start. Cilest is also used to manage the symptoms of endometriosis, a condition where parts of the womb lining grow on the organs outside the womb and cause intense pain in the lower abdomen, back and pelvis.

How does it work?

Cilest is a combination pill, which means that it contains both oestrogen and progestogen. Cilest works by preventing ovulation (the release of an egg for fertilisation) from occurring, by thickening the cervical mucus to prevent sperm from entering the womb, and by changing the womb lining so that an egg cannot grow there.

Who can take Cilest pills?

You can take Cilest contraceptive pills if you are a woman over the age of 18, are not pregnant or breastfeeding and are looking for a low-dose oral contraceptive pill to prevent pregnancy.

Who cannot take it?

You cannot take Cilest if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant. Cilest pills are also unsuitable if you have heart, liver or circulation problems, hypertension and if you are a smoker over the age of 35. If you have had any of the following medical conditions, you shouldn't take Cilest pills: phlebitis, blood clotting, hepatitis, jaundice, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), herpes, severe skin itching, otosclerosis or tumours of the breast, womb or ovary. If you currently have rotor syndrome, Dubin-Johnson syndrome, Porphyria, liver cell tumours, moderate or severe high blood pressure, hyperlipoproteinaemia or gallstones, you also should not take this combined pill. You should ensure that you mention any medications or other information about your health when complete your free online consultation.

How do you take Cilest contraceptive pills?

You should start taking Cilest on the first day of your period for immediate protection. You can take the contraceptive pill up until the fifth day of your period, but you will only be protected after seven days. Cilest pills are 21-day pills, so should be taken for 21 days of your cycle, followed by a seven-day break. After your seven-day break, you need to remember to start your new pack.

During the seven-day pill-free period you will experience a withdrawal bleed, which is just your body removing the contraceptive hormones from your system. You won't have your period as usual, because Cilest prevents ovulation. You don't have to worry about additional protection against conception during the seven pill-free days, as you will still be covered by the hormones that are already in your system.

Are there any side effects?

Cilest contraceptive pills can cause side effects if you are sensitive to the active ingredients in the medicine. Side effects sometimes affect first-time users of the pill because they aren't yet used to the treatment. However, these symptoms don't affect everybody and usually disappear within several days. The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, headaches, breast tenderness, weight fluctuations, fluid retention and vaginal thrush.
