Ciproxin

Ciproxin is a highly effective antibiotic that can kill bacteria that cause infections. It’s used in the treatment of urinary tract infections, infections that affect the respiratory tract, joint infections and is in particular very effective at dealing with pathogens that cause gastro-intestinal infections like traveller’s diarrhoea in a single day high dose treatment. It’s often used to treat infections where regular antibiotics were unable to deal with it effectively in the first instance.

How does Ciproxin ciprofloxacin work?

When Ciproxin tablets are used in the treatment of traveller’s diarrhoea, it works to directly target the bacterium that’s causing the symptoms. It contains ciprofloxacin, which is able to enter bacterial cells to influence internal enzymes that allow it to replicate DNA material, creating more bacteria and spreading. If the bacterial cells can’t spread as they normally would, the infection can’t last for long, providing quicker relief from symptoms.

Who can and can’t take this treatment?

Ciproxin is generally safe to use, and only a small group of people might not benefit as they should if they take it. You should definitely not use Ciproxin tablets if you are allergic to the active ingredient ciprofloxacin or if you are taking tizanidine. If you have kidney problems, epilepsy, myasthenia gravis, a history of abnormal heart rhythms or you tend to develop tendon problems when taking treatments like Ciproxin, you might have to take extra care while using this medication.

How do you use this antibiotic?

In order to treat traveller’s diarrhoea, one Ciproxin tablet should be taken in the morning and one twelve hours later to complete the course. If your symptoms don’t improve, it’s best to speak to your doctor as you may require additional treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Ciproxin tablets can cause side effects, but this doesn’t mean that they will affect everybody taking it. The most common side effects are luckily minor and don’t last long and can include nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea. If you find that these effects don’t go away, become worse or cause you to feel particularly uncomfortable, speak to your doctor as soon as possible.

If you start experiencing anything resembling an allergic reaction you should seek medical help immediately. These symptoms could include tightness of the chest, feeling dizzy, feeling sick and/or feeling faint.

Storage information for ciprofloxacin

It’s important that you store Ciproxin in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. This will ensure that it’s not compromised before it reaches its expiry date. Ciproxin tablets should not be used passed its expiry date. Should it reach its expiry date before you use it, it’s best to take it to your pharmacy where it can be disposed of in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.
