ellaOne Contraceptive Pill HRA Pharma

ellaOne

ellaOne is an emergency contraceptive pill (morning-after pill) that can prevent pregnancy for up to five days (120 hours) after unprotected intercourse. It's thought to be 98% effective because only two out of every 100 women who took ellaOne became pregnant during clinical trials.

ellaOne is effective for two days longer than the standard contraceptive pill, Levonelle, which can be effective for up to three days. ellaOne is also proven to be more effective at preventing pregnancy during the initial three day period than Levonelle.

ellaOne uses the active ingredient ulipristal acetate to delay the release of an egg from the ovaries, preventing fertilisation from taking place.

ellaOne is available to buy online from euroClinix as a precautionary measure to keep to hand just in case you experience a contraceptive accident. Before you place your order, you will be asked to complete a short medical consultation, to help our doctors to ensure that this is the right treatment for you.

Once your consultation is approved, a prescription is issued and passed to our pharmacy, which will dispatch ellaOne for overnight delivery. This ensures you receive your emergency contraceptive quickly, so you can be covered against any contraceptive accidents as soon as possible.

What are the benefits?

It helps to prevent pregnancy for up to five days after contraceptive failure or unprotected sex, two days longer than the standard ‘morning after pill’ Levonelle. In clinical trials the active ingredient in ellaOne, called ulipristal acetate, was proven to be more effective during the first three days with fewer women becoming pregnant than the alternative emergency contraceptive pill Levonelle.

How does it work?

During a woman’s monthly cycle, an egg is released by the ovaries. The body then releases progesterone to let the ovaries know that they should not produce another egg. ellaOne’s active ingredient alters the progesterone levels in body and this delays an egg from being released for fertilisation.

Who can buy ellaOne online?

Women over the age of 18 who have experienced contraceptive failure or who have had unprotected sex can take this medication. You should not use it if you are already pregnant. It should only be used in an emergency and can’t be used as a replacement for your regular contraceptive.

It is safe to take ellaOne contraceptive pills if you are breastfeeding, but it is advisable to wait 36 hours after taking this medication before you do so.

Who shouldn’t take it?

The ellaOne emergency contraceptive pills may be less effective when you use them alongside treatments for HIV, bacterial infections and herbal remedies such as St John’s Wort. It is advisable to mention any medications or herbal treatments you may be using during your consultation.

How do I take an ellaOne 30mg tablet?

An ellaOne ulipristal acetate tablet should be taken with a glass of water within five days or 120 hours after your regular contraception has failed or you have had unprotected sex. This medication can be taken with or without food. If you vomit within three hours after taking a pill, you should contact your doctor as soon as possible.

This medication can only be taken once during your menstrual cycle. After taking ellaOne you should continue to use your regular contraception alongside a barrier contraceptive until your next period, to safeguard against pregnancy.

Less common side effects include irregular bleeding, diarrhoea, vomiting, headache, lower abdominal pain, dizziness and a delayed period.
