Genital Warts
Genital warts are one of the most common forms of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Europe. They are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) and are very infectious. An outbreak of genital warts is characterised by small growths of flesh that appear on the genital area of both men and women. These growths can differ in colour, usually according to the skin tone of the individual on whom they appear. This STI is especially common amongst people between the ages of 17 and 33, though they can affect people of any age.
If you are infected, you have a 60% chance of infecting a sexual partner, even if you only engage in sexual contact once. For this reason, you should take a genital warts treatment as soon as possible after you become infected to reduce this risk. Though there are medications available which can help to control and clear an outbreak, there is no genital warts cure currently available. It is important to understand that the virus that causes the outbreaks, HPV, is incurable. This means that the virus will always be in your body and could trigger a further outbreak at any time.

The human papilloma virus (HPV), which is spread through sexual contact, causes this STI. Approximately 90% of genital warts infections are caused by two strains of HPV: HPV-6 and HPV-11. These strains of HPV are considered “low risk”, which means that their potential to cause cancer is low. There are other types of HPV strains which can lead to cervical cancer, such as HPV-16, but these are not the same strains that cause genital warts.
Genital warts are spread through having unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex with an infected partner. This means a person who is infected with HPV. If you engage in unprotected sex, it will be significantly more likely that you will become infected. You will also have a higher chance of this if you have multiple sexual partners.
What genital warts symptoms should I be aware of?
The majority of people will not realise straight away that they have been infected with this STI, because it can take several months before the virus leads to an outbreak. This is why it is important to get tested for STIs after you have unprotected sex.
The first genital warts symptoms will be growths of fleshy lumps on your genitals. Genital warts in women will appear in or around the vagina and labia as well as the general genital area, while genital warts in men will appear on the penis, often on or underneath the foreskin. In appearance, they can be small or large, are usually painless and can be rough or smooth. Some people report that they are itchy, but this is not the case for everyone. It is important to note that sometimes warts can occur internally, which means there would not be any visible genital warts symptoms.
What causes an outbreak?
The HPV virus remains dormant within the body for months or even years, and can’t be fully cured. While exactly what causes the virus to reactivate hasn’t yet been discovered, clinical studies have shown that the main factors of an outbreak can include a higher than normal alcohol consumption, genital friction, fatigue and stress.
