Gonorrhoea is an increasingly common sexually transmitted infection. It is a bacterial STI that is caused by the neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium. This STI is prevalent amongst both men and women, but is most likely to occur between the ages of 20 to 24 for men and the ages of 16 to 19 for women. It can be transmitted through unprotected sexual contact, be that anal, vaginal or oral sex. Gonorrhoea can also be passed on by the sharing of sex toys if one partner is infected.

Gonorrhoea is often asymptomatic, but it is easily treatable. A simple course of both Cefixime and Azithromycin antibiotics taken simultaneously will complete eradicate the infection. Both of these medications are available to buy online at euroClinix in a Gonorrhoea Treatment Pack. You can begin the online consultation process by clicking the button below.

What are the causes of this infection?

Gonorrhoea is caused by the bacterium neisseria gonorrhoeae, which is transmitted through unprotected oral, anal or vaginal sex. It is also possible to catch this infection if you share sex toys with someone who is infected. The bacteria can live in the urethra, the cervix, the throat, the rectum and the eyes.

What symptoms do you need to look out for?

A large number of individuals will not experience any gonorrhoea symptoms after they are infected. This is why it is important to undergo regular STI tests to ensure you are free from infection, especially if you have unprotected sex. When gonorrhoea symptoms do occur, they can include rashes, bleeding, painful bowel movements, itching and vaginal or urethral discharge.

For men, gonorrhoea symptoms usually first appear between five and 30 days after they become infected. They may notice an unusual penile discharge and may experience pain when urinating, or an increased need to urinate. Some men report that their testicles swell or become painful. Less commonly reported symptoms for men include incontinence, anal discomfort, rectal discharge and the swelling of the urethra.

Women commonly report an increase in normal vaginal discharge, pain when urinating and abnormal vaginal bleeding. Less common symptoms include mouth sores, abdominal pain, rectal discharge, pain during sex and anal discomfort.

It is important to realise that if the infection is not treated it can lead to serious health complications, and this is the case even if you experience mild symptoms or none at all.

What risks are associated with gonorrhoea?

This infection is easily treatable with a combined course of two antibiotics, but leaving it untreated can cause serious health problems. For men, this can include epididymitis. Women will have a higher chance of experiencing an ectopic pregnancy. Both men and women should be aware that untreated gonorrhoea can spread to the joints and even the blood, which can be life threatening.

If the infection is untreated, you will be more susceptible to other sexually transmitted infections, including the HIV virus.
