Janssen Cilag

History

The roots of the Janssen Laboratories date back to the 1930s, when Constant Janssen gained the rights to distribute medications in Belgium, the Netherlands and the Belgian Congo. The company grew with the input of Constant's son, Paul Janssen, who began developing medications in the 1950s. In 1961, the company was acquired by the American corporation Johnson & Johnson.

In the 1930s, Swiss chemist Bernhard Joos set up a research laboratory which would become Cilag Laboratories and merge with Ortho Pharmaceuticals (owned by Johnson & Johnson) in 1982. In 1995 Janssen and Cilag merged and became Janssen-Cilag, which is based in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire and employs over 500 people.

Treatments

Janssen-Cilag currently manufactures and brings to market a number of medications for conditions in the areas of women's health, mental health, HIV, neurology, pain relief, fungal infections and contraception.

Aside from the contraceptive pill Micronor, Janssen-Cilag also manufactures the Evra patch, which is the only form of hormonal contraception which releases its ingredients through the skin. Janssen-Cilag also used to own Priligy, the market name for dapoxetine, the only medication currently proven to treat premature ejaculation. Gyno-Daktarin is also a Janssen-Cilag medication which acts as an anti-fungal cream to treat bacterial infections such as vaginal thrush and has been widely popular amongst women with recurring outbreaks.

Outlook

Janssen-Cilag medications are currently treating around 1,500 million patients each year and the company is involved in a number of clinical trials dedicated to developing new medicines and finding new uses for the ones already available.

In addition to extensive involvement in medical research in particular in the areas of neurology, mental health, oncology and HIV, Janssen-Cilag also contributes generously to local charities including Macmillan Cancer Relief, Stokenchurch Dog Rescue and Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance Trust.

Johnson & Johnson, which owns Janssen-Cilag, is an American Fortune 500 multinational company which produces a number of medications and well as household supplies and over-the-counter treatments. Johnson & Johnson contributed significantly to the funding of overseas development and educational programmes and was awarded the Benjamin Franklin Award for Public Diplomacy by the US State Department.
