Levonelle Side Effects
Levonelle is one of the more established morning-after pills, and is available to help women prevent pregnancy immediately after unprotected sex. It contains a synthetic hormone levonorgestrel, that alters the level of progesterone in the body and in doing so, prevents pregnancy from occurring.
It used to be available in 2 tablets that were directed to be taken exactly one after the other, with 12 hours left between doses. Now it comes in the form of one tablet, a higher dose, which is to be taken as soon after unprotected sex as possible. It can be taken up until 72 hours after unprotected sex, but is not effective after that.
Like most prescription only drugs, this emergency contraceptive has a number of possible side effects. Everyone experiences different levels of severity, if they experience any, when it comes to side effects because all bodies react differently to the medication. Below is a list of some of the side effects you may experience. If any side effects persist, contact a pharmacist or doctor to discuss your options.
Common Levonelle side effects
- Nausea and headache
- Vaginal bleeding that is not associated with your menstrual cycle
- Abdominal pain
- Early or delayed start of your next period
- Breast tenderness
- Spotting
- Fatigue
Levonelle side effects and other medications
It can be taken with other medications, but you should tell your doctor or pharmacist during your consultation if you are taking any other medications you are taking. Some medications could lessen the effects of Levonelle or could react negatively to it and create more serious side effects.
Levonelle warnings
Apart from side effects, there are a few things to be aware of when taking Levonelle. Amongst the common side effects, are nausea and vomiting. If you vomit within 3 hours of taking Levonelle, it will not be effective in protecting you against unwanted pregnancy. If this does happen, be sure to contact your doctor and get another dose as soon as you can.
Another levonorgestrel side effect is that there could be some drastic changes to your regular period. If any of these changes cause discomfort or worry, do not hesitate to contact a doctor for advice.
If you take this emergency contraception pill while you are pregnant, or outside of the prescribed 72 hours, you could put yourself at harm. You could also be more susceptible to ectopic pregnancy, which is dangerous and painful. If you experience Levonelle side effects, like low abdominal pain or a late or light period, you may have an ectopic pregnancy and must see a doctor.
