Pulmicort is a daily use inhaler which can reduce asthma symptoms such as wheezing or coughing before they occur.
Unlike other preventative treatments it only contains one ingredient, making it an effective alternative for those prone to allergic reactions.
Reduces the likelihood of an asthma attack occurring
Contains a steroid which limits the inflammation to the lungs
Using budesonide daily can improve your quality of life by significantly reducing the chances of suffering from asthma attacks, which can be difficult to control when they occur. Pulmicort only contains one ingredient (budesonide) so it is a good alternative to other preventative treatments if you suffer from allergic reactions to some of their components.
How does it work?
Pulmicort Turbohaler contains budesonide, a corticosteroid medication with anti-inflammatory properties. Asthma attacks are caused by swelling and irritation to the air passages which lead to the lungs. By reducing these symptoms before they cause an onset you can minimise the chance of wheezing or coughing episodes.
Who can use it?
Pulmicort is a safe preventative treatment for most asthma patients, although if you experience hypersensitivity towards budesonide you may have to switch to another medication with a different active ingredient. During your consultation you should mention if you are suffering from a chest or lung infection, if you have had tuberculosis (TB) or liver problems or if you are taking any other medication, as the doctor may find that a different treatment is more appropriate for you.
What dosages are available?
Pulmicort Turbohaler is available in three different strengths: 100mcg per inhalation, 200mcg per inhalation and 400mcg per inhalation. A starting dose of one or two inhalations twice a day is usually advised for adults, although this may be increased by your doctor if your symptoms worsen and you are using your reliever inhaler more often.
How do you use the inhaler?
Instructions on how to use your Pulmicort Turbohaler will be included in the packaging but will not vary too much from your reliever inhaler. A medical professional such as a doctor, nurse or pharmacist will be able to provide a demonstration should you still be unclear as to the method of use.
Preventative inhalers are usually recommended for use twice a day, however in some circumstances you may be advised to only use your inhaler once a day. Follow the instructions regarding the dosage carefully and consult with a doctor if you feel the need to increase it.
Are there any side effects?
The use of Pulmicort, as with all medications, has some potential side effects. The most common side effects are mild sore throats and fungal infections to the mouth, which can be prevented by rinsing your mouth after using your Turbohaler. Some people experience restlessness, changes in behavior or easy bruising to the skin. If you experience skin rashes, swelling or difficulty after using your inhaler you should contact your doctor and stop using budesonide immediately.
