Ventolin, sometimes referred to by its generic name salbutamol, is a treatment most commonly found in the form of an asthmatic inhaler. It’s considered a reliever treatment for asthma, meaning that it’s designed to be used during or before the onset of an asthma attack to alleviate symptoms and open airways allowing for air to flow more easily into the lungs. Ventolin does this almost immediately, relaxing the bronchioles in the lungs from constricting air passage.

Ventolin is available in two forms - as an Evohaler or as an Accuhaler. The Evohaler is a pressurised metered-dose inhaler which can deliver 100mcg of salbutamol in a single dose; while the Accuhaler is a plastic device which contains a foil blister pack strip and can deliver 200mcg of microfine salbutamol and lactose in a single dose.

euroClinix offers a quick and easy service whereby sufferers of asthma can purchase their treatment without having to go to their usual doctor. Our service consists of a convenient online consultation which ensures the desired treatment is appropriate for your condition and safe for you to use. We can then deliver your Ventolin inhaler straight to your door via secure shipping.

What are the benefits?

An asthma attack can be frightening and stressful if it occurs when you are unprepared. Using the Ventolin Evohaler or Accuhaler however, can almost immediately reduce the symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness. This particular treatment can also be used in conjunction with other preventative treatments to lower the inflammation that occurs in the lungs as well as mucous production that may add to the severity of each attack.

How does it work?

When an asthma attack occurs, the bronchiole tubes through which air passes become constricted in response to external irritants like pollen or smoke. Ventolin functions as a beta-adrenergic receptor agonist, whereby it stimulates beta receptors in the body that causes the muscles to relax, particularly those in the lungs, allowing more air to flow through. Salbutamol may also help with alleviating the inflammation of the particular cells which is caused by asthma attacks.

The Evohaler works within five minutes to provide fast - four to six hour - and effective relief in the event of an asthma attack. The Accuhaler works in a similar way, but is not as fast-acting as the Evohaler, although it does contain a stronger dose of its active ingredient. The Accuhaler should not be taken by those with a lactose intolerance.

Who can use it?

Most asthmatics can use Ventolin safely during an asthma attack to help open up their airways or potentially avoid an attack altogether. However, you should avoid using the Evohaler or Accuhaler if you are allergic to any of the inhalers' ingredients, such as salbutamol or lactose. If this is the case, alternate treatments should be used instead.

It’s advised that you inform your doctor, or include it during your consultation, if you have diabetes, hyperthyroidism, arrhythmias, heart disease and are pregnant. These may be relevant to you using the treatment safely.

How do you use the inhalers?

How you use the inhalers will depend entirely on the severity of the condition, the onset of asthma attacks and which inhaler you choose to use. Generally as a relief treatment, it’s recommended you take two puffs of the Evohaler during or before the onset of an attack to reduce symptoms and assist breathing normally. In the case of the Accuhaler, you would only need to take one puff (or dose).

This will potentially be different if you are using a preventative treatment as well, so we advise you to consult your doctor further should you be taking more than one medication for asthma.

Are there any side effects?

Ventolin is very unlikely to cause side effects but as with any medication there is a slight possibility. The more common reactions include throat irritation, muscle pain or a cough and are probably very light if experienced at all. If you should experience any severe side effects, you should discontinue using the treatment and seek medical attention.
