Small lumps that develop in and around the anus are known as haemorrhoids or piles and are usually the result of added pressure in the veins, such as during constipation or straining when using the toilet. This can cause a number of uncomfortable symptoms to develop, including bleeding, itching, irritation, and pain in and around the anal area. Proctofoam HC is an effective treatment that provides short-term relief from the symptoms of piles, reducing swelling and alleviating itching and pain.
Proctofoam HC contains the two active ingredients, hydrocortisone acetate and pramocaine hydrochloride, which when used externally or internally helps to relieve any discomfort caused by piles. Working as an anti-inflammatory, hydrocortisone reduces uncomfortable swelling and irritation. Pramocaine works as a local anaesthetic to numb the area and provide relief from any pain or itching.
This medication should not be used if you are allergic or have had an allergic reaction to any ingredients found in this medication. Proctofoam is not recommended for children. If you are pregnant, thinking about becoming pregnant or are breastfeeding then this medication will not be suitable for you. Likewise, if you are taking any other medication, you should detail this during your online consultation to ensure that Proctofoam will still be safe and effective for you.
Before applying this medicine, you should wash your hands thoroughly and ensure that the area around the anus is washed and properly dried. For internal use, the applicator containing 4-6mg hydrocortisone acetate and 4-6mg pramocaine should be used to apply the medication two or three times daily after each bowel movement (maximum four times daily). After use the applicator should be separated and washed thoroughly. Proctofoam HC should not be used for longer than a week.
As with all prescription medications there may be some side effects when using this medication. The side effects that may occur when using Proctofoam include irritation in the affected area, a burning sensation, thinning of the skin and dermatitis. Other side effects, although rare can include mood swings, delusions or memory problems or confusion. It is recommended that you speak to a medical advisor immediately if you experience such side effects.
