Prempak-C is a combined hormonal replacement therapy medication that helps treat and prevent oestrogen deficiency symptoms in menopausal and postmenopausal women.
Using conjugated oestrogens and progestogen, it replaces the low levels of hormones in the body, alleviating menopausal symptoms. It can also treat osteoporosis in women.
Prempak-C is a type of hormone replacement therapy preparation containing two types of female hormones, an oestrogen hormone and a progestogen. Women use Prempak-C during and after menopause.
During menopause, the amount of oestrogen a woman produces decreases drastically. This can cause symptoms such as hot flushes, sweating and vaginal dryness. You will only be prescribed this medicine if your symptoms seriously hinder your daily life.
The main benefit of using this hormonal replacement therapy treatment is that it helps to treat the distressing symptoms of menopause such as night sweats, hot flushes and dryness in the vagina by replacing the low levels of oestrogen in the body that are caused by the menopause. Prempak-C can also be used as an effective treatment for osteoporosis in women at high risk of suffering from fractures and who have previously tried other treatments without success.
Prempak-C contains two tablet types, with one containing conjugated oestrogen and the other containing norgestrel. These are both forms of the female sex hormones oestrogen and progestogen. Leading up to the menopause, oestrogen hormone levels in a woman decrease. As a result a woman will develop a number of menopausal symptoms that if left untreated can prove to be distressing. The conjugated oestrogen in this treatment works as a supplement for the falling levels of oestrogen, in turn helping to alleviate any occurring symptoms.
As this medicine is for women who have not had a hysterectomy and therefore still have a uterus, the progestogen (in the second tablet) in the form of norgstrel is used because heavy doses of oestrogen have the potential to cause endometrial cancer in women who still have a uterus. The progestogen works to reduce the risk of cancer, though it does not eliminate the threat entirely.
This medicine can be used when you start the menopause, which generally for women is between the ages of 40-60. However, this treatment is not recommended for long-term use and ideally should not be taken once you are past your mid-fifties. If you are allergic to any of the ingredients in Prempak-C then you should not take this medication. Likewise you should not take this treatment if you are aged 65 or over; are pregnant or breastfeeding; have a history of breast cancer or any cancers sensitive to oestrogen; suffer from blood clots, migraines or headaches; have unexplained vaginal bleeding; kidney or liver problems; high blood pressure; have had asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, angina, a pulmonary embolism, gallstones, systematic lupus erythematosus, oroscleosis, porphyria or deep vein thrombosis then this medication is not suitable for you.
One conjugated oestrogen tablet should be taken daily. For women who are still menstruating, then this should begin on day one of her period during her cycle. For women whose cycle has ceased or is infrequent, treatment may be commenced at any time. Additionally, one norgestrel tablet dose should be taken daily from day 17-28 during oestrogen treatment therapy. Subsequent courses are repeated without interval. If symptoms are not fully controlled with the lower strength dosage of this HRT, then the higher strength may be prescribed.
It is essential that you take this medication as prescribed by a registered doctor. If you forget to take a tablet you should take the forgotten tablet as soon as possible, with therapy continuing as usual. If more than one tablet has been forgotten, only the most recent forgotten tablet should be taken. You should not take double the usual dose to make up for missed tablets as this can cause serious side effects.
As with all medications there is a risk of side effects. Common side effects with Prempak-C include, but are not limited to, breast pain and tenderness; vaginal discharge and thrush; breakthrough bleeding and spotting; changes in weight; loss of sex drive and fatigue. More serious side effects, such as depression, liver problems and gall bladder disease, are very rare, but you should seek medical assistance if they occur.
This treatment may not be suitable with other medications including herbal medication such as St John’s wort. If you are currently taking medication you should inform the doctor before taking this medication.
