Paludrine and Aclovor is an anti-malaria treatment that has been clinically proven to minimise the risk of you getting malaria if bitten by an infected mosquito while travelling abroad to a low to high risk area.
This treatment is different to other anti-malarial treatments as it doesn't contain one medication but two that have to be taken in a different dose over a number of weeks. The combination of both treatments increases the recovery and likelihood to prevent the spread of the parasite. It also minimises the risk of sensitivity that some people experience when taking this type of medication.
The primary benefit of Paludrine/Avloclor tablets is that they offer effective, dual-action protection against a range of malaria parasites. It is particularly recommended in areas that are considered to be of lower risk like India. Paludrine/Avloclor tablets are particularly beneficial to people who are particularly sensitive to certain medications, because their mild dosage is less likely to cause side effects than other antimalarials.
The chloroquine phosphate in the Avloclor tablets attacks the malaria parasites after they have entered the red blood cells and stops them from multiplying. It does this by stopping a chemical that is produced by the parasites to protect them-selves. When this protection is gone, the parasites are vulnerable to the natural defence mechanisms of the body.
The proguanil hydrochloride in the Paludrine tablets also prevents the malaria parasites from multiplying, though in a slightly different way. It targets the enzyme responsible for the reproduction of the parasite. Without this ability, the parasite cannot spread.
Both of the ingredients work together to provide you with a preventative treatment for malaria to fight the infection before it is able to spread to the liver where it can cause damage to your internal organs. In doing so it lets the natural immune system fight the infection quickly without having to keep attacking it as it spreads. Unlike some antimalarial treatments Paludrine and Avloclor can also work on strains of malaria that are resistant to chloroquine alone.
Because of the different actions of the Paludrine and Avloclor medication and dosages the medication has to be taken according to the specific instructions to be effective. You should read the instructions before taking this medication to ensure you take them correctly. An outline of how the medication needs to be taken is outlined below:
Paludrine and Avloclor should be taken for at least a week before you leave on holiday and continued throughout your trip abroad. When you return home you should continue to take it for a further five weeks.
If you forget to take your dose you should take it as soon as you remember unless it is close to the time you are due to take your next dose. You should not double dose.
In addition to taking Paludrine and Avloclor you should also prevent getting bitten by:
