Travellers' Diarrhoea

Causes and available antibiotic treatment for traveller's diarrhoea

Travellers' diarrhoea is one of the most common illnesses to afflict travellers, affecting as many as 60% of travellers all over the world. The illness is not usually serious or life-threatening, but the symptoms can be uncomfortable and unpleasant and can cause dehydration. It does not usually last for very long, with the majority of cases lasting no longer than five days. The causes of the illness are primarily bacterial, with most people becoming infected after drinking contaminated water.

If you are planning to travel abroad, you should prepare yourself for the possibility of the illness by ordering a Travellers' Diarrhoea Pack, which is available here at euroClinix. If your trip is very soon, you will benefit from our free overnight delivery service, which will ensure you receive your treatment before you travel. By purchasing your travellers' diarrhoea treatment in advance, you will benefit from the peace of mind of knowing you are prepared.

Symptoms of travellers’ diarrhoea

The vast majority of travellers who catch this illness will do so in the first fortnight of their time abroad. The symptoms typically include loose stools, cramps, fever, abdominal pain, bloating, depression, nausea and vomiting.

Though these symptoms are unpleasant, the illness does not usually last much longer than three to five days. Antibiotics for travellers’ diarrhoea will help to relieve the symptoms and shorten the duration. It is extremely rare for diarrhoea to last for longer than a month, and if this does occur then the cause is not bacterial.

Where am I at risk?

Though travellers’ diarrhoea is a risk in a large number of destinations, some countries do pose a higher risk. This may be due to particularly poor hygiene or sewage services. You are most at risk of experiencing travellers’ diarrhoea in Asia, the Middle East, Mexico, Africa and Central and South America.

Travellers’ diarrhoea treatment will be effective in any of these destinations.

How can I prevent travellers’ diarrhoea?

While it is not possible to be vaccinated against travellers’ diarrhoea, there are steps you can take to reduce the risk, both before you leave and during your holiday. You may want to consider taking pro-biotic supplements in advance of your trip, which will help your intestinal flora to adjust to the changes in bacteria that occur when you eat foreign food. Preventative antibiotics for travellers’ diarrhoea are also available.

As so many of the cases of travellers’ diarrhoea occur due to drinking contaminated water, it is advisable to pay close attention to the water that you are consuming in a foreign country, especially those deemed a higher risk for this illness. If you are not sure if the water is clean, don’t drink it. You should also bear this in mind with ice cubes, fruits and salads. To avoid drinking contaminated water, it is sensible to only buy water if you can see that it is sealed properly.

Make sure you avoid food that is not prepared or cooked properly. Remember to always wash your hands before you eat and after using the toilet
