What is Skinoren?

Skinoren is used to treat acne, a common skin condition affecting 95% Trusted source NHS Government Source Go to source of people between 11 and 30 years of age.

Skinoren comes in the form of a topical cream, meaning it is applied directly to the spots on your skin. It is a white, opaque cream that comes in a tube.

The active ingredient in Skinoren is azelaic acid, which has anti-bacterial properties.

How does it work?

Skinoren fights against acne in two different ways:

  • Firstly, the active ingredient (azelaic acid) is anti-bacterial. When rubbed into the skin, Skinoren targets the bacteria that cause pimples and spots to form.
  • Secondly, the treatment stops your skin cells from growing too quickly. This prevents your skin cells from blocking your pores, which causes spots to form.

How long does Skinoren take to work?

Whilst Skinoren affects everyone differently, it generally takes 4 weeks for you to start noticing significant improvements in your acne.

For best results, Skinoren should be used consistently over several months.

Is it effective?

According to one study Trusted source PubMed Government Source Database of Biomedical Research Go to source taken on patients with non-inflammatory acne:

Skinoren was shown to decrease acne spots in size and number with very minimal side effects.

This makes it an excellent choice for those whose acne presents in the form of whiteheads and blackheads, with minimal swelling and inflammation.

How do I use it?

Skinoren cream should be applied to the affected area(s) twice per day, in the morning and at night.

  • Before applying the cream, wash your skin with a gentle cleanser.
  • From the tube, squeeze out about 2.5cm of cream (to cover the entirety of your face).
  • Use more cream if you are applying the treatment to other areas of the body.
  • Apply the cream to your skin, making sure to rub in all of the product until it is properly absorbed.
  • Take care not to get any Skinoren cream in or around your eyes.

If you forget to use Skinoren, apply it to your skin as soon as you remember and then continue taking the treatment as you were before.

What are the side effects?

Not everyone who takes Skinoren will experience side effects. However, when applying the treatment to your skin, you may experience any of the following:

Common side effects
  • a burning or painful sensation
  • itching/tingling on the skin
  • redness
  • peeling skin
  • dryness
  • temporary skin pigmentation or discolouration (if you have darker skin)

In general, skin irritation improves over the course of treatment.

What if Skinoren irritates my skin?

When you first start using the treatment, Skinoren may cause some skin irritation (especially if you have sensitive skin).

In this case, only apply the cream once per day instead of twice.

If irritation persists, the treatment should be temporarily stopped until your skin has returned to normal.

If the condition of your skin hasn’t improved, visit your doctor or a healthcare professional. They may suggest a different kind of acne treatment for you.

Please note: Applying Skinoren more than twice a day will not improve its effectiveness and will likely increase irritation.

What are the precautions?

Whilst Skinoren is safe for the majority of people to take, you should not use this treatment if:

You are allergic to azelaic acid or any of the other ingredients in Skinoren.

You are pregnant or breastfeeding (as there is very little research exploring the effects of this treatment on pregnant and breastfeeding women).

Other precautions include:

  • Skinoren must only be applied externally to your skin.
  • Do not put any of the product near or in your eyes.
  • If any cream does get into your eyes, make sure to rinse them thoroughly with water.
  • Do not apply Skinoren right before taking a bath, shower, or before going swimming (washing off the product will make it less effective).
  • Inform your doctor if you become pregnant when taking Skinoren as it may not be safe for you to continue treatment.

Currently, there is no evidence to show that Skinoren interacts negatively with other skin cosmetics, products, or sunscreens.

Can I take it with other acne treatments?

You can combine Skinoren with other antibiotic acne treatments which are taken orally (as tablets). This is only possible once you have a prescription from a doctor.

However, you cannot combine Skinoren with any other topical anti-acne treatments as this can increase the chances of your skin becoming irritated and dry.

How does Skinoren compare with other acne treatments?

Skinoren works best on acne that resembles whiteheads and blackheads.

If you suffer from red and inflamed acne, other topical treatments such as Differin and Duac may be more suitable.
