If it’s your first time taking Wegovy, you may feel a little uncertain about how to inject yourself properly. If that’s the case, don’t worry, I’m going to take you through the entire process step-by-step so you can use your injection pen with confidence.
As most of my patients tell me, once you inject yourself for the first time, you should be far more comfortable doing it again going forward. Plus, I’ll answer some commonly asked questions about Wegovy so you can get a deep understanding of this weight loss treatment before you begin.
If you prefer visual instructions, you can also watch our video showing exactly how the injection works.
Before injecting Wegovy, there are some steps you need to take to prepare. These steps ensure safety, so please don’t skip this.
First, wash your hands with soap and water. This makes sure the injection site doesn’t get infected.
Next, check your injection pen. Make sure:
Once everything has been ticked off, you can safely inject the medicine.
You can inject Wegovy into three places:
You can try different spots each week to see which one feels the most natural. Most find the stomach or thigh the easiest places to inject.
Here, I’ve illustrated where to inject Wegovy. Remember to rotate sites to prevent bruising and avoid damaged skin.
Make sure you don’t inject into skin that is bruised, tender, scarred, or irritated.
Before you use a pen for the first time, you need to prime it. Do this with every new pen you use:
You may see a small drop of medicine release from the tip of the needle. Don’t worry, this is supposed to happen, and there’s a little extra medicine included in each pen to make up for this.
With the pen primed and an injection site chosen, you are now ready to inject Wegovy.
Follow these instructions to inject Wegovy safely:
I’ve also made a useful diagram if you prefer a visual explanation.
Wegovy is a once-weekly injection, so you’ll need to repeat these steps every week at roughly the same time.
Wegovy pens use a small needle to pierce the skin and inject the medicine. While this can put some people off, try not to worry, the pen is only long enough to pierce the fatty tissue layer. Most people describe it as feeling like a small pinch or mild sting.
You also may experience a mild reaction at the injection site. This is completely normal and rarely a cause for concern. Common reactions include:
These symptoms are usually mild and go away fast.
You may have heard conflicting advice when it comes to storing your pens, so it can be hard to tell which way is right. However, there is one correct way to store Wegovy that I will explain now.
Once your treatment arrives, it needs to be put straight into the refrigerator. This is because it needs to be stored at 2°C to 8°C.
Once you use the pen, you can put it back in the fridge between uses, or you can keep it for a maximum of 6 weeks at room temperature (below 30°C).
Do not freeze the medicine, and do not use it if it is cloudy.
If you forget your scheduled injection, take it as soon as you remember, provided it has been 5 days or less since the missed dose.
If 6 or more days have passed since you missed the dose, skip that dose entirely and take your next injection on your original scheduled day.
Important:
Never take two doses at the same time, and do not take more than one dose in the same week.
Most people notice a change in their appetite within a couple of weeks, but it can take a month or two before you notice a change in your weight.
The effects of Wegovy become more noticeable the higher your dose, which you can do every 4 weeks until a maintenance dose is reached. You may experience some side effects for a short while after moving up a dose, but these should go away once your body gets used to the new strength.
This is completely normal, and only becomes a problem if side effects don’t go away or if they’re severe.
While some mild discomfort is usually nothing to worry about, some reactions may require medical help:
If you are unsure whether something is normal, it is always safest to seek medical advice.
