What is the MGen treatment pack?

The mycoplasma genitalium (MGen) treatment pack is a course of antibiotics containing both Doxycycline capsules and Azithromycin tablets.

It is currently the first line of treatment and the most effective way of curing mycoplasma genitalium, a common STI.

If you’ve tested positive for MGen, you can purchase our treatment pack online here at euroClinix.

How does it work?

Individually, Doxycycline and Azithromycin can treat a variety of different bacterial infections.

But, taking both medications (over 10 days) is the most successful way of treating MGen.

Mgen is caused by mycoplasma genitalium bacteria, which start to grow and multiply once you have become infected.

By taking the capsules and tablets from the treatment pack, you stop the bacteria from being able to spread. This gives your immune system a chance to kill the bacteria and clear you of your infection.

How do I take it?

The antibiotics come in the form of capsules and tablets, which should be swallowed with water.

Please note: Do not crush or chew the tablets when you are taking them.

The treatment pack contains:

  • 14 x Doxycycline capsules (100mg each)
  • 4 x Azithromycin tablets (500mg each)

The two antibiotics must be taken on different days. Do not take both Doxycycline and Azithromycin within 24 hours of each other.

Always read the patient leaflet carefully and follow the instructions given. However, a guide for the 10-day course of antibiotics is shown below:

Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5
2x 100mg Doxycycline capsules 2x 100mg Doxycycline capsules 2x 100mg Doxycycline capsules 2x 100mg Doxycycline capsules 2x 100mg Doxycycline capsules
Day 6 Day 7 Day 8 Day 9 Day 10
2x 100mg Doxycycline capsules 2x 100mg Doxycycline capsules 2x 500mg Azithromycin tablets 1x 500mg Azithromycin tablet 1x 500mg Azithromycin tablet

Directions for Doxycycline:

  1. For the first 7 days of treatment, take 2 Doxycycline capsules daily
  2. Make sure to spread out the doses (morning and evening)
  3. Take the capsules standing upright, and avoid lying down for 30 minutes after taking them (so they can reach the stomach quickly)
  4. Take each dose with a full glass of water

Directions for Azithromycin:

  1. On day 8, take 2 Azithromycin tablets as a single dose (take both tablets in the morning)
  2. On days 9 and 10, take 1 Azithromycin tablet in the morning only
  3. Take each dose with a half glass of water

What if I miss a dose?

If you forget to take a tablet, take one as soon as you remember. However, if you forget all day, do not make up for the forgotten tablet by taking a double dose.

Instead, continue taking the course of antibiotics as usual, aiming to finish 1 day later than planned.

Always finish the entire course of treatment, even if your symptoms have gone away. If you don’t take all the medication, your infection could return.

What are the side effects?

As with all medication, there is a risk that you will experience some side effects whilst taking treatment for MGen.

Not everyone gets them, and if you do, they will likely be mild and disappear when you finish the treatment.

Some common side effects include:

Doxycycline Azithromycin
  • skin reactions
  • sensitivity to light and sunburn
  • headaches
  • diarrhoea
  • stomach ache, loss of appetite
  • aching joints and muscles
  • diarrhoea
  • headaches
  • feeling sick
  • stomach pain
  • reduced appetite

Please note: To find a full list of side effects, consult the patient leaflet included in your medication pack.

Signs of an allergic reaction

In rare cases, you might experience an allergic reaction to the medication in this treatment package.

Any of the following symptoms could be a sign of a serious allergy:

  • wheezing, or difficulty breathing
  • tightness in the throat or chest
  • an itchy, red, swollen, or blistered skin rash
  • swelling of the mouth, tongue, lips or throat

If you think you might be having an allergic reaction, call 999 or get to a hospital as quickly as you can.

What are the precautions?

Before taking the MGen treatment pack, make sure to read the patient leaflet in detail.

You should also read the list of ingredients included in the medication. For example, some azithromycin tablets contain soya oil which could trigger a reaction if you are allergic to soya.

You may not be suitable for this treatment pack if you:

  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • have kidney or liver problems
  • have lupus
  • have an inflamed oesophagus
  • have heart problems

Always consult your doctor about any other medication you are taking. This is important so you can avoid any unpleasant interactions that could take place by mixing medicines.

Lastly, do not have intercourse or oral sex for 14 days after starting treatment.

After this period you can take another STI test to check that the infection has cleared before having sex again.
