What is Solifenacin (Vesicare)?

Solifenacin, sold under the brand name Vesicare, is a medicine used to reduce symptoms of urinary incontinence or overactive bladder syndrome.

When taken once daily, it helps the bladder muscles relax. This prevents unwanted leaks or sudden urges.

Vesicare tablets are available to buy online from euroClinix with free next-day delivery.

How does Solifenacin (Vesicare) work?

Incontinence is most often caused by overactive bladder muscles. These muscles naturally contract when the bladder is full. If you have incontinence, they contract too often, which can cause leakage.

Solifenacin works by relaxing these muscles. It belongs to a group of medicines called antimuscarinics or anticholinergics. These medicines block the chemical reaction in the bladder muscles, known as the detrusor muscles, to prevent them from contracting too much.

Over time, the medicine will gradually reduce urinary frequency and urgency.

Who can and can’t take Solifenacin (Vesicare)?

This medicine may not be suitable for some people.

Do not take Solifenacin if you:

  • are allergic to Solifenacin or any of the other inactive ingredients
  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • are unable to pass urine (urinary retention)
  • have uncontrolled glaucoma
  • have myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness)
  • have severe liver disease
  • have a gastrointestinal disorder (severe stomach problems)

You should also check with your doctor if you have any of the following medical conditions:

  • constipation
  • severe kidney disease
  • moderate renal (liver) problems
  • difficulty passing urine (bladder obstruction)
  • heart problems (e.g. high blood pressure or an irregular heartbeat)
  • low levels of potassium, calcium or magnesium in your blood
  • a hiatus hernia
  • autonomic neuropathy - nervous disorder

If you’re not sure whether any of these apply to you, consult your healthcare provider before taking this medication.

What dosage of Solifenacin (Vesicare) should I take?

5mg per day is the recommended dose of Solifenacin. Depending on your condition, your doctor may recommend you take the higher dosage which is 10mg.

Do not take the higher dosage unless you have been told to. If you take too much, please consult a doctor as soon as possible.

How do I take Solifenacin (Vesicare)?

You should take one 5 or 10mg tablet once per day, with or without food. Swallow each tablet whole with some water. Do not crush or chew them.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time.

Store Vesicare at room temperature and out of reach of children.

What are the possible side effects of Solifenacin (Vesicare)?

Like all medicines, Vesicare can cause some side effects. The most common side effects are mild and should go away on their own.

Some common and uncommon side effects include:

  • dry mouth
  • dry eyes
  • blurred vision
  • stomach problems (e.g. nausea, abdominal pain or constipation)
  • heartburn, indigestion and acid reflux
  • urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • dry skin
  • tiredness

Serious side effects are rare. However, you should be familiar just in case you do experience any.

Rarer side effects include:

  • an allergic reaction such as a skin rash (hives) or difficulty breathing (angioedema)
  • dizziness or headache
  • urinary retention

For a full list of potential side effects please refer to the patient information leaflet. If you’re worried about side effects, consult a healthcare professional before taking Vesicare.

Does Solifenacin react with other medicines?

It’s important your prescriber knows whether you take any other medicines. This includes any over-the-counter medicines or herbal supplements.

Medicines can interact with one another, increasing the risk of side effects as well as altering the medicine’s effects.

The following medicines may cause adverse effects when taken with Solifenacin:

  • other incontinence medicines (e.g. tolterodine)
  • medicines that affect digestion (e.g. metoclopramide and cisapride)
  • antifungal medicines (e.g. ketoconazole and itraconazole)
  • epilepsy medicines (e.g. phenytoin and carbamazepine)
  • certain antibiotics (e.g. clarithromycin and rifampicin)
  • bisphosphonates - medicines that treat osteoporosis

Before you use Vesicare and you take other medicines, check with your doctor beforehand. They can check if it's safe for you to use.
