What are the benefits?

When you start your menopause, your levels of oestrogen decrease. This can lead to a number of symptoms, including hot flushes, night sweats and vaginal dryness. Premique and Premique Low Dose are effective hormonal replacement therapy treatments that help to relieve the symptoms of the menopause. This treatment can also work to slow down the development of osteoporosis, which can occur after the menopause if other treatment has proved unsuccessful.

How does Premique work?

As the menopause approaches, a woman starts to produce less oestrogen, resulting in a drop of oestrogen blood levels. As a result, the decrease in oestrogen levels produces a number of uncomfortable menopausal symptoms. Premique is a period-free HRT, which means that you will not experience a monthly bleed while on this treatment.

Premique and Premique Low Dose contain two active ingredients, including conjugated oestrogens, which work as a supplement for the lack of oestrogen levels, helping to reduce menopausal symptoms. The second ingredient, medroxprogesterone acetate works as a progestogen. For women who have not had a hysterectomy, the increase of oestrogen levels can stimulate the growth of the womb lining, potentially causing endometrial cancer if the womb growth is unchallenged. The inclusion of progesterone is included to counteract the effects of oestrogen on the womb lining, thus reducing the risk of cancer.

Who cannot use Premique?

Premique can be used when you start to experience menopausal symptoms, which for most women is between the ages of 40-60, however this treatment ideally is not recommended for use after your mid fifties. If you are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medication then it is highly recommended that you don’t take this medication. Likewise if you are currently being treated for or have a history of breast cancer, cancer of the lining of the womb or oestrogen-dependent cancer, you will not be prescribed this treatment. Other contra-indications include a history of blood clots, stroke, heart attack, angina, liver disease or problems with the function of the liver; unexplained vaginal bleeding; pregnancy or thinking about becoming pregnant; breastfeeding; and a history of porpohyrias and galactose intolerance.

How do you take Premique?

Premique is usually prescribed in the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration in a 28-day pack. For both HRT dosages, it is advised that you take one tablet at the same time everyday, with no breaks between packs. If you are not currently taking another HRT or taking another period-free HRT, you can start your first pack of Premique at any time. If you are changing from an HRT medication that still enables you to have a monthly bleed, it is generally recommended that you start this HRT after you have finished the course of your previous therapy.

It is important that you take this medication as prescribed by your doctor. If you forget to take a tablet you should take it as soon as possible. However, if the missed pill is more than 12 hours late, it is recommended that you skip the dose you missed and continue to take the next dose at the usual time. Do not double dose to make up for the missed pill.

How can this medicine affect other medicines?

It is of utmost importance to be completely open and honest when discussing the medicines that you're taking during your online consultation. This includes medicines bought without prescription and herbal medicines. Similarly, it is advised that you consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any new medicines while taking this one. Your doctors or local pharmacy will be able to advise you on which medicines will have a negative affect on your body when collaborated with Premique.

  • Antiepileptic medicines such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital and primidone
  • Barbiturates such as amobarbital
  • Nevirapine or efavirenz for HIV infection
  • Protease inhibitors for HIV infection such as ritonavir and nelfinavir
  • Rifamycin antibiotics such as rifabutin and rifampicin
  • The herbal remedy St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum)

Does Premique have any side effects?

Like most medications Premique may cause side effects, although not every person using this medication will develop them. Side effects with this medication include, but are not limited to, breast pain, tenderness and nipple discharge; muscle and joint ache; weight changes and breakthrough vaginal bleeding or spotting. It is also possible that you may experience more serious side effects, such as changes in triglyceride levels and mood; problems with the heart or kidneys; blood clots and migraines. If you are concerned about side effects, you should contact your doctor or a health professional for advice. It is important to always read the supplied Patient Information Leaflet before commencing a course of treatment.
