Zyban, also available as the generic* Bupropion, is a treatment for those struggling to quit smoking. You will find a course of Zyban reduces the withdrawal symptoms that make smoking cessation so hard - symptoms include irritability, cravings, mood swings, and headaches.
Other conditions Zyban is prescribed to treat include major depressive disorder (MDD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and bipolar disorder. The latter two are off-label prescriptions.
Currently, euroClinix only offers Zyban for smoking cessation. You should contact your GP if you think you need this treatment for another condition.
*A generic medication contains the same active ingredients as a branded equivalent - the only difference is its price.
We all know what makes smoking so addictive - nicotine. Nicotine activates dopamine production in your brain. Dopamine is a hormone that is naturally produced during pleasurable and successful moments in your life. For example, if you complete a difficult task at work, go for a run or listen to music.
In this way, nicotine mimics accomplishments, essentially training your brain into thinking smoking is a beneficial behaviour. The reinforcement of dopamine makes cigarettes very addictive and difficult to quit.
Initially, when you stop smoking, you will experience a loss of dopamine - this is what leads to withdrawal symptoms. In particular, cravings are prevalent at first, as your body desires a dopamine hit.
The effect bupropion has on smoking was first discovered in patients suffering from depression. It was noted that as they took medication containing the active ingredient bupropion hydrochloride, their desire to smoke and number of cigarettes smoked decreased.
As an antidepressant, it is believed that bupropion hydrochloride encourages dopamine release - making nicotine less important to the body. Essentially, Zyban works as a cigarette replacement, but with a lower intensity, so it is easier to quit permanently.
Similarly, euroClinix also offers the medication Champix, which contains varenicline. Champix also mimics the effects of nicotine, allowing you to quit more easily.
Remember - always follow the advice of a healthcare professional when starting any new medication. You can also consult the patient information leaflet (PIL) for more detailed instructions.
You should start taking this medication while smoking for one to two weeks.
Depending on how many weeks it has been since you started a course of Zyban, will affect how many tablets you should take.
For the first week, from days one to three, you should take one 150mg prolonged-release tablet. For the following days, four to six, you should take two tablets, with an eight-hour break between doses.
From day number seven, you should continue to take two tablets daily. On any day of week two you should stop smoking.
For the third week and beyond, you should continue to take two tablets every day. If you get to week seven and you still feel a strong desire to smoke or are smoking, you should inform your doctor. You may need another form of treatment to help you quit.
If you feel as though you are no longer addicted to smoking at any point during the course, do not stop taking Zyban. Otherwise, the urge to resume smoking may return.
Do not take more than the recommended dosage of Zyban, even if you miss a dose. Simply, continue with the next dose as normal. Overuse of this medication will not make it any more effective and will increase the risk of dangerous side effects occurring.
All medications pose a risk of side effects. It is important to report any reactions to your doctor - this includes side effects not listed below or in the patient information leaflet.
