Spedra is an ED medication that contains the active ingredient avanafil. Avanafil belongs to a group of medicines called PDE-5 inhibitors (phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors) alongside Sildenafil (Viagra), Tadalafil (Cialis) and Vardenafil (Levitra).

These medicines work by blocking the action of the enzyme PDE-5, which breaks down certain molecules produced during sexual stimulation. By doing so, this keeps the penile tissues relaxed and allows more blood flow through the blood vessels of the penis. This allows you to more easily get and sustain an erection.

It’s important to note that Spedra, as with other PDE-5 inhibitors, will only work if you are already sexually aroused.

How long does it take Spedra to work?

Spedra is very fast-acting, and will work after 30 minutes. The effects of Spedra will last for 4 - 5 hours. However, this will not mean you will have an erection for the entirety of that length of time.

Spedra is only suitable for men over the age of 18, it cannot be prescribed to women for sexual dysfunction.

It also may not be suitable for some men with certain medical conditions and you should make sure you tell your prescriber your medical history so they can ensure it’s safe for you to take.

You should not take Spedra if you have:

• a cardiac problem
• angina (chest pain)
• a condition that causes arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat)
• had a heart attack or stroke
• liver problems
• kidney problems
• uncontrolled low blood pressure or high blood pressure
• non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) - loss of vision caused by reduced blood supply to the eye
• a family history of eye or cardiac problems

You should also not take Spedra if you have previously had an adverse or allergic reaction to Avanafil.

There are three doses of Spedra available: 50, 100 and 200mg tablets.

• Spedra 50mg - the lowest dose, suitable if you are prone to side effects of Spedra or you have taken the medium dose and found the effects too strong
• Spedra 100mg - the initial recommended dose
• Spedra 200mg - the highest dose, suitable if you find the the middle dose does not work

If it’s your first time taking Spedra, you should start by taking the 100mg dose. You can see how you react to it and then alter your dose depending on whether you need a stronger or lower dose.

You should take Spedra tablet at least 30 minutes before sexual activity.

You can take Spedra with or without food on an empty stomach, but avoid eating a heavy meal before taking it. This can make the medicine take longer to work.

You should also avoid drinking alcohol or grapefruit juice with Spedra as this can increase the effects of the medicine and make you more at risk of experiencing side effects.

You should also wait to drive or operate machinery until you know how Spedra affects you, as Spedra can make you feel dizzy and affect your vision.

As is the case with all prescription medicines, Spedra can cause some side effects. Thankfully, most common side effects are mild and will go away on their own.

Some common side effects of Spedra include:

• headache
• flushing
• nasal congestion
• dizziness
• blurred vision
• back pain
• heart palpitations
• indigestion
• nausea
• tiredness

If you experience any of the following side effects, stop taking Spedra and seek immediate medical attention:

• have an erection lasting longer than 4 hours (priapism)
• sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes
• sudden reduction or loss of hearing

It’s important to inform your prescriber of all the medicines you are taking, including over-the-counter, prescription and recreational drugs to ensure Spedra is safe for you to take.

You should not take Spedra if you take any of the following:

• nitrate medicines (e.g amyl nitrite or “poppers”)
• HIV medicines
• certain antifungal medicines (e.g ketoconazole or fluconazole)
• certain antibiotic medicines (e.g clarithromycin or erythromycin)
• other erectile dysfunction medicines

If you are taking any of the following, please consult your doctor before taking Spedra:

• alpha-blockers - for prostate problems or high blood pressure
• medicines for an irregular heartbeat (e.g quinidine)
• medicines for epilepsy (e.g phenobarbital or primidone)
• carbamazepine - for epilepsy or as a mood stabiliser
