Lymecycline is a type of antibiotic, meaning that it is used to fight against bacteria.
It is most commonly used to treat moderate to severe acne. However, it can also be prescribed for the treatment of chest infections and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Please note: Lymecycline can only be prescribed for acne if you are already using a topical treatment (either Epiduo gel or Skinoren).
If you aren’t already using a topical treatment, you can purchase one of our Lymecycline combination packs. These contain either:
Just like any antibiotic that treats acne, Lymecycline works by killing acne-causing bacteria.
Lymecycline works best to treat moderate or severe acne when it is combined with a topical cream (like Epiduo or Skinoren).
These anti-acne creams work in a complementary way with Lymecycline and are able to target the affected areas directly.
For acne, you will likely keep taking Lymecycline for 8-12 weeks.
Antibiotics take some time to start working, so you’ll probably start noticing improvements in your skin after a few weeks.
If you haven’t seen any improvements after 8 weeks of treatment, tell your doctor. They might suggest that you try an alternative acne treatment.
You can take Lymecycline for up to 6 months if your doctor thinks it is appropriate to do so.
Lymecycline comes in the form of a tablet, which you should take once per day with a glass of water.
Whilst it is not recommended to combine alcohol and antibiotics, it is safe to drink in moderation when taking Lymecycline.
When taking Lymecycline for acne, you will also be using a topical cream every day on your skin. This will also be applied either once or twice per day.
Talk to your doctor before taking Lymecycline if you:
When taking Lymecycline, make sure to avoid exposure to sunlight or UV light from sunbeds, as the treatment can make your skin more sensitive.
You should stop the treatment and consult with your doctor if you experience any skin problems whilst taking this antibiotic.
Remember to take your antibiotic capsule with a full glass of water.
Please note: If you take too many capsules, phone your doctor or visit your nearest hospital, even if you are feeling okay.
Some types of medication won’t work as well when they are taken with Lymecycline. Or, they might reduce how well Lymecycline works.
It is advised that you wait 2 hours between taking Lymecycline and the following medicines:
If you are taking any form of contraceptive pill, it might not work as effectively if you are taking Lymecycline.
Make sure to use another form of barrier contraception such as a condom.
As is the case with all types of medicine, there is a chance you will experience some side effects whilst taking Lymecycline. These are completely normal - although not everyone will get them.
Common side effects include:
|
Tell your doctor immediately or go to your nearest emergency services if you experience any of the following:
This might indicate that you are having an allergic reaction to the medicine.
Whilst most people can safely take Lymecycline, this treatment is not suitable if you:
It is NOT safe to take Lymecycline or any other kind of tetracycline antibiotic if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
The use of these medicines can affect the proper growth and development of a foetus, particularly the development of teeth. It may also cause permanent discolouration.
