What is Diflucan?

Diflucan, a brand name for the antifungal ‘fluconazole’, is a clinically proven antifungal treatment that men and women can buy online to quickly and effectively treat various fungal infections caused by a type of yeast called Candida.

In particular, Diflucan tablets are taken to successfully treat genital and oral thrush, with symptoms beginning to disappear within just 24 hours of taking your first tablet. Although it is prescribed at euroClinix for the treatment of genital and oral thrush (candidiasis), Diflucan can also be prescribed to treat the following yeast and fungal infections:

For the treatment of vaginal yeast infections, male thrush and oral thrush, Diflucan is taken orally once a day (until the infection clears) in the form of a 150mg capsule. Usually, it only takes one dose to clear the infection but one of our doctors can prescribe up to 3 tablets if you require prolongation of treatment. All you have to do is fill out a short consultation form that will be assessed by one of our registered doctors.

How does Diflucan work?

Diflucan contains the active ingredient fluconazole, which belongs to a group of antifungal medications known as ‘azole antifungals’ alongside ketoconazole and miconazole. They are a group of antifungals that treat a wide range of fungal infections, but fluconazole is most commonly used for vaginal candidiasis, candidal balanitis (penile thrush) and oral candidiasis. All of which are caused by a yeast called Candida.

Fluconazole, and other azole antifungals, work by inhibiting the growth of enzymes that are responsible for fungal growth. They specifically target the enzyme responsible for the sterols that monitor cell membrane growth. Depletion of these sterols damages the cell membrane and the fungals cells die.

What are the benefits of taking Diflucan?

The biggest benefit of Diflucan is that only a single dose of fluconazole is needed to treat oral and genital thrush. This makes treating the condition easy and straightforward as no other pills or tablets are required, and this also means that the chances of side effects are relatively lower than if you were to take a high dose. Unlike topical treatment, Diflucan is easy to administer and ensures the treatment is effective. Creams or gels can be difficult to apply, especially internal creams, but may be preferable for topical relief of any itching or soreness typical of genital thrush.

Whilst thrush in some cases can go away where your immune system and bacteria fight it off, Diflucan will help to quickly and effectively alleviate the uncomfortable symptoms.

Who can take Diflucan?

Diflucan fluconazole can be taken by the majority of men and women over the age of 18 experiencing symptoms of thrush. However, some groups of people should take caution and speak to their healthcare provider before taking. Contraindications include those who:

If you have had multiple bouts of thrush in the last six months, you or your partner have had exposure to a sexually transmitted disease or you are experiencing other symptoms such as fatigue or abdominal pain, you may also want to speak to your doctor before taking this medicine. This is because in rare cases, you may have an underlying medical condition that is causing your symptoms.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Taking Diflucan during pregnancy should be avoided as fluconazole can cause birth complications. Traces of fluconazole can be found in breast milk so could also pose a risk for newborns.

It is always advised that pregnant women or new mothers seek medical advice before taking any medicine, as well as disclose any medication they are taking.

How do I take Diflucan?

Diflucan (fluconazole) is available to buy online at euroClinix in one 150mg dose for the treatment of thrush. It can be taken with or without food at any time of day, and you should see results within 1-4 days of taking the treatment. If your infection has not cleared after this amount of time, you should consult your doctor for further advice. Whilst you can order up to 3 tablets at euroClinix, one of our doctors will advise on the dosage based on your symptoms. You should not take more than a single dose unless instructed to by a healthcare professional or your prescriber.

What are the side effects of Diflucan?

As with all prescription medications, Diflucan can cause some side effects. Whilst side effects are very unlikely to occur when taking Diflucan tablets, if any side effects do happen to occur, they are likely to be very mild in nature and only temporary.

Common side effects of fluconazole include:

Common:
  • Headache
  • Stomach pain or discomfort
  • Diarrhoea
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Being sick (vomiting)
  • Skin rash

For a comprehensive list of side effects, including more serious side effects, please refer to the patient information leaflet that will be in the box with your medication or is available to download on this page.

Does Diflucan react with any other medicines?

If you are taking any other medication, either on prescription or over-the-counter, you should check with your doctor or a healthcare professional before taking Diflucan as there may be drug interactions. If you are taking any of these medicines, it’s advised that you should not take Diflucan:

There are also some medications that may interact with Diflucan, so you should take caution and seek advice before taking it. These medications include, but are not limited to:
