What is Brevinor?

Brevinor combined contraceptive pills provide a steady supply of hormones to the body that provides near total protection against pregnancy.

Due to the adjustment in synthetic sex hormones that mimics your natural cycle, Brevinor can provide more than pregnancy prevention. For example, the combined pill can regulate your period if you experience sporadic bleeding throughout the month. It can also make periods lighter and less painful, reduce cramps, minimise PMS and improve your skin.

It is a low-dosage pill, which means it contains less oestrogen and progestogen than other contraceptive pills. This reduces the risk of developing side effects.

Brevinor is equivalent to BiNovum and Trinovum, which have both been discontinued by their manufacturer. If you were previously on either pill, you could use Brevinor as an alternative, as it contains the same active ingredients.

How does Brevinor work?

Brevinor works in the same way as most combined contraceptives by influencing your natural menstrual cycle with synthetic hormones of oestrogen and progestogen. In Brevinor, each tablet contains both ethinylestradiol (oestrogen) and norethisterone (progestogen) to prevent pregnancy in three ways.

  • It thickens mucous in the cervix, which makes it almost impossible for sperm to reach the womb.
  • It also prevents an egg being released from the fallopian tubes, which means that if sperm could reach the womb, there would be nothing to fertilise.
  • Finally, this pill stops the walls of the womb from thickening. This means that if sperm could reach an egg and fertilise it, the egg can't implant itself in the womb and develop, which prevents conception.

Every pack of Brevinor pills should be taken as instructed for this contraceptive to be 99% effective.

It's important to remember that Brevinor, and any hormonal contraceptive, is not effective against sexual transmitted infections (STIs).

How to take Brevinor

Combined contraceptives are often preferred as they are easy to take. Taken over 21 days, each tablet is small, easy to swallow and highly effective.

  • Take one tablet a day for 21 days
  • Take each tablet at the same time
  • This is followed by a seven-day pill break
  • You will experience a withdrawal bleed (period)
  • Start the new pack after seven days
  • Repeat the process

You must take one tablet every day to safeguard you against pregnancy. It's recommended you take a pill at the same time each day to help you remember.

To remember to take the pill at the same time every day for 21 days, many women decide to take one tablet either first thing in the morning or last thing in the evening when they are less likely to be busy.

If you forget to take your Brevinor birth control pills, you should take a tablet as soon as you remember. If you've missed one or two pills, you will still be protected from pregnancy and you should continue taking the pack as usual. If you miss any more, the contraceptive won't be effective and you'll need to use a condom for the next seven days.

Brevinor dosages

Unlike other combined pills, Brevinor contains the same amount of synthetic hormones in each pill. This means that it doesn't matter which order to take each tablet in, although the blister packs are clearly marked with the days to help you keep track.

Brevinor contains two active ingredients of artificial oestrogen and progestogen, ethinylestradiol and norethisterone. The dosage of norethisterone is 500mcg and the dosage of ethinylestradiol is 35mcg.
