Genital herpes is an STI (sexually transmitted infection), caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-2). It is spread by having unprotected sex with a partner who has been infected. An outbreak of genital herpes can cause a number of symptoms such as sores, blisters and ulcers to develop on and around the genital area. However, many people who have been infected with the virus will not initially experience symptoms until the virus is triggered and an outbreak occurs. Genital herpes cannot be cured, but it can be controlled with antiviral medication like Aciclovir, Famvir or Valtrex.
